7 Foods That Actually Damage Your Kidneys

Kidneys is a crucial organs that do a tough job. Filtering and excreting waste products in the bloodstream is just the starting point . Your kidneys also maintain the body’s overall fluids balance as well as release hormones that make necessary red blood cells, regulate blood pressure, and ensure bone health.

Sometimes we put our kidneys through a lot, via  medications, diet, and environmental toxins. The result can really be a struggle with kidney stones, cancer, polycystic kidney disease or even kidneys failure.

Some stress on our kidneys can’t be helped, and because they are designed to handle many toxins, we can trust that our kidneys are quit tough. But any organ even is it is strong can become overburdened and sustain damage.

You might be surprised how many foods can actually damage the kidneys, even seemingly the good and healthy ones. Make sure you’re not overdoing it on any of the following 5  foods.

1. Nuts

If you are prone to kidney stones, nuts are not a that good as snack. They contain a  mineral called oxalates, which are found in the most common type of kidney stones. If you’ve had stone in the past, skip all the nuts.

For the healthy people, it’s important to be aware of your intake of oxalates–containing foods, such as  beets, potato chips, spinach, French fries, and bran flakes.

Some of these items, nuts included, can be very healthy additions to your daily diet. But as with all other things, balance is the key. Choose a variety of some greens rather than eating just  spinach, and eat nuts in moderation.

2. Avocados

Not avocados! These delicious and creamy green fruits are what taught us that eating fats is okay. However, avocados also contains high dose of potassium, which controls  electrolyte balance, fluids, and pH levels. Kidneys rely on the right balance of sodium and potassium to do their main job properly; too much of either can spell troubles.

Hyperkalemia is when someone is having too much potassium in the blood, and this can happen in people with advanced kidney diseases. It often causes numbness, nausea, weakness, and slow heart rate.

Luckily, you needn’t worry too much about potassium or avocados if you don’t have pre–existing kidney diseases. Most of us don’t usually get enough potassium in our daily diets anyway.

3. Caffeine

This is a rough one if your focus rely on your morning cup of coffee or tea in order to get going each day. Energy drinks and soda are similarly dangerous if you already have issues in the past with your kidneys. Many studies show that long-term caffeine consumption can worsen chronic kidneys diseases and may increase the risks of kidney stones.

Caffeine is known as  a mild diuretic, which can affect the kidneys’ ability to absorb water. In reasonable amounts, this shouldn’t stop your kidneys from accessing enough water to do the filtering and many crucial functions, but in excess it can causes problems.

Caffeine also stimulates thereby and blood flow increases blood pressure. Again, not a problem if you have normal level of  blood pressure, but something keep in check if your pressure is high.

4. Dairy Products

Dairy products, including cheese, milk,  and yogurt, are loaded with calcium and can increase the level of calcium in your urine. This has been linked with a higher risks of kidneys stones.

For people who already have kidney issues, reducing consumption of dairy products has been found to make the  process of filtering done by kidneys easier and simple. This can actually delay the need for dialysis.

But there is dairy product high in saturated fat, which ups the risk of heart diseases. Unfortunately, heart diseases are a major risk factors for kidney disease, and kidney diseases can present similar risks to the heart.

Switch to olive oil flavored with your favorite herb for dressing vegetables  and topping bread to reduce your reliance on butter.

5. Salt

Sodium works along side  with potassium to maintain the fluids balance in your body, which is crucial to proper functioning of the kidneys. But most of us get way too much sodium in our daily diet, even before we salt food at the table. Processed products contain a lot of it, more than you’d even need.

Too much sodium causes the kidneys to retain water in order to filter and dilute the salt in your bloodstream, which places more work and an undue burden on them.

A long term salt habit raises blood pressure and can damage the kidney’s nephrons, the microscopic structure that filter waste. Stick to healthy fresh whole foods as much as possible in order to control the salt level.

Each of the foods and ( food additives) on this list are best eaten in moderation because of the load they can put on your kidneys.

Most are not necessarily that dangerous if you have healthy kidneys function, but are definitely not recommended for people who have been diagnosed with kidney stones or any kidneys related diseases.

And because the kidneys play crutial role in detoxifying the body, it makes good sense to take care of them as much as  you can.
